Shin&Tomoko Azumi

Shin&Tomoko Azumi

Azumi was formed in 1995 by Shin and Tomoko Azumi, a Japanese design team based in London. Simplicity and surprise, Shin and Tomoko Azumi wish to evoke playfulness within their products and add a theatrical quality in their design. Their furniture is often converted in form and character, and to emphasise movement, Shin and Tomoko Azumi have chosen simple forms. Materiality and Immateriality  Shin and Tomoko Azumi are interested in creating a new manner or way of using objects, as well as experimenting with materials to give a tactile quality to their designs. From Object to Space  Shin and Tomoko Azumi have been expanding their design territories from objects to interior design and architecture. A careful observation of daily life comes from Shin Azumi's career as an industrial designer for NEC. Tomoko Azumi was trained as an architect, and has an interest in large spaces. Whilst studying at the Royal College of Art they developed a liking for experimentation in their design. Entertaining aspect of their designs grew from their experiences as director and art director for a dance company, Vital Theatre, at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993.
